First Habitat for Humanity mission – 1989

For many years the members of First Lutheran Church under the leadership of Pastor Richard Shibley traveled to near Elkins, WV in support of Tyrand Parish and their cooperative Christian ministry.  In 1989, it was decided to change focus and that summer the first work crew for Habitat traveled to Columbia, S.C.  Rev. Jim Nichols, a son of First Lutheran, was serving as director of the regional affiliate of Habitat for Humanity in Columbia.  We were graciously housed at St. Simon and St. Jude Episcopal Church in Irmo.   Complete with kitchen, the air-conditioned church was a great respite as the heat index would reach 120 degrees daily. The house we worked on was in Lexington.  It was a memorable trip and we returned in 1990 (video posted under History).  Since then we have only missed a couple years with destinations including Ironton, Kalamazoo, MI; Kokomo and Hamilton County, IN; New Kensington, PA and Stuebenville. Enjoy the video.
